6 Botanical Gardens to See This Spring
Here are six of the most beautiful botanical gardens across the state.
Story by John Martin
Texas has the second highest number of native plant species at 4,500. It seems that us Texans aren’t the only ones that can survive the heat! You might not be able to visit them all, but here are six of the most beautiful botanical gardens across the state:
Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center
Founded by former First Lady of the United States Lady Bird Johnson and actress Helen Hayes in 1982, the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center is located in Austin on a 284-acre site featuring nearly 900 species of Texas native plants. It also plays host to at least 148 bird species and 15 mammal species.
Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden
Located in Dallas, this 66-acre arboretum and botanical garden is filled with exhibits, annual events and educational programs for children and adults. Its affordable admission prices and 19 different gardens make the Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden a top-notch location for families and flower-enthusiasts alike!
The East Texas Arboretum and Botanical Society
The East Texas Arboretum and Botanical Society features 100 acres of trees, flowers and wildlife in the city of Athens. There are two miles of trails in the woods, immersing you everything the arboretum has to offer.
San Antonio Botanical Garden
Fifteen featured attractions await you in the 33-acre San Antonio Botanical Garden. This garden features garden-to-table culinary classes, native plant sales, guided tours, gardening classes and more. It’s the city’s official botanical garden, and entry is free.
Chihuahuan Desert Nature Center
The Chihuahuan Desert Nature Center in Fort Davis is home to 507 acres of semi-desert grasslands and igneous rock outcrops. It’s open year-round and features five miles of hiking trails along with six exhibits on area geology, history and wildlife.
South Texas Botanical Gardens and Nature Center
The South Texas Botanical Garden and Nature Center features 180 acres of gardens, trails and wildlife. Located in Corpus Christi, this coastal nature center started as a one-acre cottage and has since expanded into an extensive family-friendly getaway.
